At Madison Family Dental, we are committed to the comfort of our patients. We use sedation in our practice as a way of reducing patient discomfort and for helping patients overcome any anxiety that they might be feeling as a result of upcoming treatment.
At Madison Family Dental, we offer local anesthesia and laughing gas for our patients. Both types of sedation are safe for adults and children.
A local anesthetic is used strictly for the purpose of minimizing patient pain and discomfort in a specific area. It works by numbing the direct site of treatment so that the patient won’t physically feel the work that is being completed. The medicine will only affect the immediate area, and it will not have any impact on the patient’s current mental state. As a result, a local anesthetic does not reduce the anxiety for a nervous or apprehensive patient; however, it can provide a patient will comfort in knowing that they won’t pain during a dental procedure.
Laughing gas is an inhaled substance that works to reduce feelings of anxiety or apprehension that occur prior to and during dental treatment. The medicine is administered by having the patent breathe in the substance through a special mask, and it goes into effect very quickly. The patient should find that any feelings of fear, anxiety or nervousness will be quickly replaced by a warm feeling of relaxation and giddiness. Laughing gas is known for its very short duration, and the medicine should wear off rapidly once treatment has been completed. The patient will then be able to continue with their day as normal in most cases. Laughing gas is very safe, with most patients feeling zero side effects. This makes laughing gas appropriate for many types of dental applications.
